Category: Island, St.John, and Live Music

What To Do in Cruz Bay – The March Live Music Scene There is plenty of live music going on most every night in Cruz Bay this season. Most venues are a short stroll from one another, making it easy to visit more than one in the same evening. Many bars and restaurants tend to have a regularly scheduled performer on set days of the week. If you find your favorite, chances are you can catch them more than once while visiting. You will find them listed below by establishment. Some of the more music-heavy establishments like the Beach Bar and this season the Barefoot Cowboy, will bring in bands from away. This is a real treat for locals and these nights draw big crowds and make for fun parties! There are no cover charges. Our suggestion: start off by catching a regular performer during one of the many St.John happiest of happy hours. Move on to the next venue for a soulful blend of music paired with appetisers and dinner. Top it off with night caps and your dancing shoes. St.Thomas Carnival 2017 Schedule, April 1-29

    Date: 04/01/2017 - 04/29/2017

Time: 12:00 am to 12:00 am

History of St. Thomas Carnival It is the biggest party of the year, and each island has its own.  The first carnival was staged in 1912 during the final years of Danish occupation and lapsed during World War I. Revived in 1952; Carnival has become the second largest festival in the Caribbean. A month-long series of dazzling pageants and talent shows is held to choose royalty to rein over the festival.  Fun events such as a boat race, Greased Pig Contest and Toddlers Derby entertain everyone at the festivities. A series of elimination contests to crown top performers are called Calypso Tents.  Calypsonians offer satirical commentary on the state of the islands, oftentimes mocking the shenanigans of politicians.  Other popular events held during Carnival is j’ouvert, a morning jump up, a food fair presenting the islands’ best traditional eats and a competition to crown the King and Queen of the parade troupes. The children’s and adult’s parade close the lively month with brilliantly costumed and decorated troupes and floats. *SEE FLYER BELOW FOR SCHEDULE OF EVENTS For an in-depth look at St.Thomas Carnival 2017 and what not to miss, check out this fabulous post by St.Thomas’s very own Aslin Sauer.   Aslin is the owner of St.Thomas Food Tours and a regular contributing author to the WhatToDo-VI blog the VI Insider.
