    The St. John Festival St. John Festival is a month long event that starts with steel pan performances and pageants and builds up to the week of July 3rd (Emancipation Day) and the 4th (Independence Day). That final week is party time with the big events: village, food Fair and the parade. Beautiful costumes, great music and the wonderful energy and spirit of Virgin Island’s people make the adults parade a success every year. Carnival’s month long activities always culminate on the 4th of July with a parade and evening fireworks. The parade on St. John involves children and adults.     Beach-to-Beach Power Swim

    The Beach-to-Beach Power Swim contains four simultaneous events: Short course(solo) from Maho Beach to Cinnamon Beach (1 mile) Intermediate course (solo) from Maho Beach to Trunk Beach (2 ¼ miles) Long course(solo) from Maho Beach to Hawksnest Beach (3 ½ miles) Long course(three-person relay teams) from Maho Beach to Hawksnest Beach. The relay team transition points will be at Cinnamon Beach and Trunk Beach. In each of the events, swimmers may compete using snorkels, fins, and/or exposure suits in a separate category of “assisted” swimmers. However, swim paddles, webbed (training) gloves and other swim aides are not permitted. To help swimmers train for the event, Friends of Virgin Islands National Park has scheduled three practice swims: Advance Registration, Feb 1-May 5. Registration fees: Adults $50, Youth $30 (17 and under) General Registration, May 6 – 26th.     Reef Bay Hike led by Virgin Islands National Park Service Rangers - 05/29/2017

    Reef Bay Hike with NPS Join National Park Service Rangers for the premier hiking experience in Virgin Islands National Park! Reservations and purchase of transportation vouchers for the Reef Bay Hike, led by Virgin Islands National Park Service Rangers, will now be done through the Friends of the Park Store located street-side in Mongoose Junction. Step back in time while experiencing a moist tropical forest as you hike down the verdant Reef Bay Valley. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to learn about the people who have called St John home and about their relationship to the natural world. Sugar plantation ruins, stone walls from cattle grazing, and ancient rock carvings left behind by the pre-Colombian Taino can be found along the trail. This evidence from the past is a reminder of changes over time on the island. The oldest and tallest trees on the island can be found in this valley, creating a canopy of shade for hikers and a habitat for a variety of wildlife. Throughout time, people survived using vines, trees, flowers and fruits that are now preserved and protected for future generations. This is a very popular activity and advance reservations are highly recommended.Inquiries about reservations for the hike at the NPS Visitor Center will be directed by counter staff to the Friends of the Park Store. The schedule for trips will be as follows: January – April: 3 trips/week (Mon, Tue, Thu) May – August 15: 2 trips/week (Mon, Thu) August 16 – October: 2 trips/week (Mon & Thu) November – December: 2 trips/week (Mon, Thu) The frequency of trips may be modified by the NPS based on demand or other conditions.All details of the trip will remain the same: the taxi to the Reef Bay Trailhead will depart the National Park Visitors Center promptly at 9:30 a.m. and return to Cruz Bay by boat between 2:30pm – 3:00 pm.Vouchers should be picked up from the Friends of the Park Store in Mongoose Junction, and we encourage pick up in the days prior to the hike.     Bajo El Sol Gallery to Host Opening “In the Garden of Your Mind: An Exhibition for the Young and the Young at Heart” Cruz Bay St. John: On Friday, June 2nd, at 6pm the Gri Gri Project at Bajo El Sol Gallery in Mongoose Junction, St. John will be hosting the opening of its next exhibition, “In The Garden of your Mind: Art for the Young and Young at Heart.” Mongoose Junction’s monthly “First Friday” art & music event will be occurring the same evening from 6 pm to 9 pm. This exhibition will feature children books, limited edition prints, original illustrations, mosaics, sculptures and paintings by David Hill, Lisa Parfitt, Kat Stevens, Alexis St. John and Mandy Thody. This exhibition hopes to delight the inner child in all of us and to remind us of Pablo Picasso’s words “that every child is born an artist, the problem is how to remain one once we grow up.”
